Toronto Fringe Review: Felt Cute (Might Delete Later)

TikTok takes to the stage in JPEG.Fr3ckle Productionz’s Felt Cute (Might Delete Later) in the Factory Theatre Mainspace. Featuring creators Reanne Spitzer and Sultanna Krispil, this show is an energetic two-hander that pays homage to and parodies many of the current trends connected to online culture. With some comedic beats landing stronger than others, Spitzer and Krispil provide an entertaining and occasionally sobering glimpse of social media’s chokehold on this well-meaning yet narcissistic chapter of human history.

As performers, both Spitzer and Krispil share a natural chemistry and likeability that is matched only by their skills as dancers, as seen in their re-enactments (and, sometimes, reinterpretations) of popular TikTok dances. The dances and song choices were well curated and proved to be a timely reflection of the trends of the last few years. While the commentary is clearer during select dance sequences, it does not undermine the technical skill it takes to perform these pieces in tandem.

A majority of the show is delivered at a fast and loud pace; however, the show is at its strongest when the pair explore stillness. A simple, yet effective ode to the doomscroll, and a few tender moments involving live music, offered a palpable glimpse into Spitzer and Krispil’s humanity. That said, the unexpected chaos during their “mental health break” was perhaps the strongest comedic moment within the show.

This mixed multi-media show playfully holds a mirror to society to show us the evolution (or de-evolution) of humanity’s attention span and empathy. Felt Cute (Might Delete Later) offers flashes of a Gen Z Garfunkle & Oats with moments of earnest existential contemplation.

Felt Cute (Might Delete Later) is on now until July 17 as part of the 2022 Toronto Fringe Festival.
