Album Review: Tucker Lane, Random Fireworks on a Beach Obscured by Trees

Singer/multi-instrumentalist Leslie Stanwyck and bassist Johnny Sinclair have honed their craft over the decades. Whether with time spent with The Pursuit Of Happiness or forging ahead with Universal Honey, the pair know a good song when they see (and write) one. And with their adorable roots/pop concoction Tucker Lane there seems to be plenty of those among the baker's dozen presented.

There are a few true highlights here, including "Love Or Hatred" which is a jaunty, bottleneck bluesy romp Stanwyck shows all kinds of sass on. And the opener "Paper Wings" resembles some fine summery pop intersection of Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde and Susanna Hoffs. For the most part there is a horde of up-tempo ear candy such as the gear-shifting "We Got Our RocknRoll" with plenty of time to flesh out the nifty ditty.

If you're seeking a roots rock/highbrow pop mix that's consistent, then this easily satisfies. Both Sinclair and Stanwyck co-produced and they simply shine on the lovely "Hole In Your Story." Meanwhile Tucker Lane can churn out perfectly polished toe-tappers like "You Know I'll Wait" that are well worth the wait! In short this is packed with sonic fireworks that'll make Tucker Lane anything but obscure.
