Album Review: Foad HP, Persian of Colour

On the Canadian comedy scene, Foad HP needs no introduction. He’s a well-known actor, comedian, and writer who has graced the stage on some of the nation’s most successful shows. If you haven’t seen his comedy stylings on Just for Laughs, Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, or Stand Up NBC, you’ve probably still giggled at something he wrote for This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

On debut album Persian of Colour, HP serves up a sampler platter of strong opinions. He does a great job introducing his perspective and what sets him apart in the comedy world. Subjects include race and culture clashes, veganism, and a dedication to rock-hard abs. 

This is traditional stand-up comedy. If you’re a fan of classic acts like Freddie Prinze and Eddie Murphy, you’ll like Foad HP. He sets ‘em up, knocks ‘em down, and moves onto the next premise. He’s snappy, sarcastic and unflinching with uncomfortable topics (heads up: many tracks have an explicit content warning). While some transitions feel abrupt at times, his enthusiastic audience is along for the ride. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s happy to show them the aforementioned abs.

If you don’t already know his work, Persian of Colour is the perfect introduction to this prolific artist. If you do, it’s everything you love about Foad HP neatly packaged into a fun 40 minutes.
