Comedy Records Presents 10 Year

Comedy Records, Canada’s first record label dedicated to releasing stand up and sketch comedy albums, celebrates its tenth anniversary this month. Ten years ago today they released a compilation album featuring 11 young comedians, including K Trevor Wilson (Letterkenny), Dave Merheje (Ramy), and Monty Scott (2020 Juno nominee). 

Today, Comedy Records has released Comedy Records Presents 10 Year, a new compilation album highlighting their roster with tracks from Arthur Simeon, Clare Belford, K Trevor Wilson, Monty Scott, Nick Reynoldson, Jay & Eytan, Todd Graham, Mark DeBonis, Efthimios Nasiopoulos, Pat Burtscher, Dena Jackson, Garrett Jamieson and Sprattacus. 

Comedy Records is a completely independent label and have significantly contributed to the growth of the Canadian comedy scene. Over the past decade they have released dozens albums in a variety of comedy styles from some Canada’s best including Mike MacDonald, Christina Walkinshaw, DJ Demers. Let’s revisit some of the best albums from their ten year history.

Runnin' At The Mouth - Wit My Woes

Runnin’ At The Mouth is a crew of stand-up comedians including Marito Lopez, Mark James Heath, Aisha Brown, Jhanelle Dennis, and Kweku Winful. Released in 2015, Wit My Woes is 10 tracks of top notch hip-hop comedy with guest appearances from comics Nick Reynoldson, Kyle Hickey, and Dave Merheje. Comedy Records released their second album Da Cream Soda Fur Coat in 2017.

Ladystache - So Many Wolves

“They are crass, energetic and like to make out with puppets.” If that description piques your interest then Ladystache is definitely for you. Ladystache are a Toronto-based sketch comedy duo featuring Allison Hogg and Steph Tolev. So Many Wolves was their first album on Comedy Records in 2014, followed by Older and Wider in January 2020.

Fog and Lasers - Fog and Lasers

Fog and Lasers is a musical comedy collaboration from Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, who brought together comedians and musicians to write each hilarious song on the album. With music from members of The Elwins, Dwayne Gretzky, and Weaves, you may think you have stumbled onto another underrated alternative Canadian record, but when you hear the perfectly twisted lyrics written by Baroness Von Sketch Show, New Eden and Kim’s Convenience alum, you’ll know you’ve been hit by Fog and Lasers.

Sara Hennessey - Trouble in Saradise

Trouble in Saradise was the debut comedy album by Sara Hennessey, and was recorded live at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Trouble in Saradise is a fast and furious records. Must-listen tracks include T-Shirt Gun, Sour Balls, and Hotmail.

Arthur Simeon - The Blackest Panther

Arthur Simeon, a banana bread connoisseur and lover of slow jams, released his sophomore stand up album Blackest Panther with Comedy Records in February 2020. It received unanimous critical acclaim and is a remarkable capsule of his signature storytelling ability.
